The book translated by burton raffel, beowulf, is written in third person. Good and evil is one of the main conflicts in the poem beowulf. Grendel is an alienated individual who just wants to be a part of something.

In john gardners grendel, grendel, both the main character and narrator of the story, narrates the story from a first person point of view. I feel that this adds a personal touch to the story because all the emotions he describes are raw emotions.

Structurally, beowulf is divided into three main parts, each one of which centers around beowulfs confrontation with a particular monster first grendel, then grendels mother, then, fifty years later, the dragon. Each monster functions symbolically as a force of evil against which can be tested the moral force of the hero.
